​In most cases, oral cancer screenings are often performed during a regular dental check-up. The dentist will examine the mouth and feel for any abnormalities or lumps. Dr. Grisel Martos goes beyond simple oral exams and incorporates the use of state-of-the-art technology to perform advanced screenings.

  • This cancer produces an uncontrollable amount of cell damage surrounding healthy tissues within the mouth. It can develop in several areas, including the lips, the oral cavity – where the gums, teeth, and tongue are located – or the oropharynx – where the soft palate and tonsils are located.

WHO IS AT RISK?

​While certain hereditary traits may be part of the cause, there are other risk factors which can increase the likelihood of developing this condition:

  • Tobacco Use

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Poor diet

  • Extreme sun exposure

Men over 50 have an increased risk, and 70% of reported cases occur in men. Among men, it is the sixth most common cancer behind prostate and lung cancer. It is also suspected that the human papilloma virus (HPV) can be a risk factor as well.

THE PROCEDURE

For the screening, we go beyond a simple visual examination. We use the most modern state-of-the art tools in order to to identify, evaluate, and monitor abnormal cell formation. We are proud to use ViziLite® Tblue®, a tool that highlights suspicious growths that may go unnoticed during visual oral exams.
